Periodontal (gum) Disease

Gum disease, also referred to as periodontal disease, has the potential to prove quite painful, frustrating and expensive if left unaddressed.  Gum disease treatment hinges on nuanced factors ranging from the stage of gum disease to the patient’s personal health history and more.  Gum disease is typically treated with scaling and root planing and/or periodontal surgery.  However, it is up to the patient to keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy after periodontal disease is addressed at our Daytona Beach, Florida dental practice.  If you have pain in your gums or suspect you might have early periodontal disease, schedule an appointment at our dental practice by dialing (386) 255-8866.

Scaling and root planing is performed in one visit to our office.  The scaling procedure scrapes away tartar and plaque from the periodontal pockets.  The root planing component planes or smoothens out the surfaces of teeth, ensuring gum tissue has an opportunity to heal and gradually reconnect.  Once the tartar and plaque are removed from beneath the gum line, the dentist might recommend a specialized mouthwash or the use of a medication to help minimize discomfort and expedite the healing process.
