Extractions

Dental extractions begin with an initial consultation at our Daytona Beach, FL dentist’s office.  Our dentist, Dr. Sutinder S. Kohli, will analyze the decayed or otherwise compromised tooth and explain the removal procedure.  Patients should be aware that certain medications that reduce clotting or consistency within blood require a brief pause prior to extraction.

Patients at our Daytona Beach dentist’s office receive anesthesia prior to the point of removal, guaranteeing the tooth can be loosened without significant pain.  A numbing gel might also be used prior to the injection to improve comfort all the more.  The extraction process is highly precise to decrease the chances of complications and improve the potential outcome.  The tooth is lightly rocked back and forth, allowing the bone to compress, eventually creating the space necessary to disconnect it from the ligament.  The ligament that can withstand pressure holds the tooth in position.  The tooth is released from the fibers of this ligament with a small incision created with a periotome made of a thin blade.

The dentist will also consider the use of gauze in the mouth to help gradually ease the tooth out of its socket so it doesn’t fall out of the socket and potentially move downward.  If necessary, the dentist will section the tooth into individual components to minimize trauma to nearby tissues and nerves during the removal process.  Such pieces are loosened within the socket using an elevator.  Fragments of the tooth are removed until none remain.
